As a psychologist, I have dedicated myself to helping people become emotionally and psychologically healthy. Along the way, many personal and professional experiences have shaped my understanding of human nature and human struggles.
For instance, while working with native American communities at the Acoma-Laguna-Canoncito Hospital in New Mexico, I deepened my understanding of the power of community connections and the painful effects of transgenerational trauma. Years later, while functioning as the clinical director of the Women’s Trauma Program and Chief of Psychology at Somerset Medical Center in New Jersey, I gained a tremendous appreciation of the lifelong effects of childhood trauma. These and other activities offered me greater insight into the complexities of the human experience.

At the heart of what I learned about creating a sense of well-being is the importance of connection and gaining compassionate self-awareness, which is essentially self-awareness from a compassionate perspective.
In addition to its influence on my work as a therapist in individual and couples therapy, I have brought this understanding to my efforts in many other venues, such as my YouTube channel, writing, and teaching both mental health providers and the public. I have authored the books Insecure in Love, Bouncing Back from Rejection, and The Insecure in Love Workbook. In addition to writing the weekly Relationships blog on WebMD for over 10 years, I write for two other blogs, Authentically You and Making Change (for Psychology Today).
